Abstract
1,155,639. Continuous casting-machines. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. 6 Sept., 1967 [16 Sept., 19661, No. 40837/67. Heading B3F. In the horizontal continuous casting of light metals, e.g. aluminium, magnesium or their alloys, an insulating closure 22 placed between a reservoir of molten metal 20 and the mould 24 is shaped by providing a recess 52 and a shelf member 60 so that molten metal enters the mould through a gate opening 36 as a stream 46 adjacent the bottom part of the mould. A body of molten metal 54 is formed in the recess 52 which ensures a more uniform temperature gradient across the depth of the ingot as it solidifies. The mould 24 is cooled by water sprays 30 that are also directed on to the ingot 32. A plurality of radially disposed channels 48 are also provided in the mould by which a lubricant may be supplied to the surface of the ingot. The ingot may be withdrawn by a powered endless belt.
