Abstract

1,266,020. Continuous casting. H. A. FROMSON. 20 June, 1969, No. 31412/69. Heading B3F. A continuous casting apparatus has a tundish 11, a copper mould 15 and a chamber 21 containing a liquid coolant which is preferably molten barium chloride. The cast ingot may be supported by rollers 26 and leaves the chamber 21 through an opening in a copper ring 27, said opening being slightly larger than the crosssectional area of the ingot so that a thin layer of solidified coolant forms on the surface of the casting as it passes through the opening. The mould 15, the chamber 21 and the ring 27 are all provided with passages 16, 23 and 28 respectively, through which a coolant may be passed. The static pressure exerted by the head of molten salt above the casting 25 tends to counteract the static pressure of the molten metal in the core 19 thereby lessening the tendency of the latter to rupture the solid shell 18.
