Abstract

1306982 Casting processes DAUSSAN ET COMPAGNIE 28 May 1970 [2 June 1969] 25839/70 Heading B3F When casting metal ingots the mouth of the ingot mould 1 or its head-box is provided with a feeder head lining B of heat-insulating or exothermic material. The lining has a lower peripheral ledge 6 sealed about the entire periphery of the mould wall 3 or head-box wall. Above the ledge 6 a cavity C is formed between the lining wall 7 and the mould wall 3 or headbox wall. The cavity is vented at 10 and communicates with the mould cavity through ducts 9. The metal is poured to a level N and enters the cavites C througe the ducts 9 to solidify rapidly and form a metal band about the lining. When or before the metal reaches the level N, exothermic powder P is placed upon the metal surface. If desired, a cover may be placed over the metal bath on top of the powder P. The formation of the metal band enables the mould to be removed from the cast ingot while metal in the feeder head lining is still liquid. In a further embodiment, instead of a cover, a fusible composition is placed upon the cast metal, this composition forming a cover by the action of heat from the cast metal.
