Abstract

967,032. Casting processes. H. J. DAUSSAN. Dec. 7, 1962 [Dec. 11, 1961], No. 46212/62. Heading B3F. A bag 1 containing a charge 2 of a substantially anhydrous composition for improving the quality of the ingot, is suspended in an ingot mould at a level at which the bottom of the bag is destroyed by the heat of the molten metal reaching the level at which turbulence is reduced, thereby allowing the charge to spread over the surface of the melt and the bag to be retracted upwardly automatically, as by a spring strip 7a. In the case of top pouring more than one bag may be disposed laterally of the pouring jet or jets and shielded from the heat thereof by a metallic or other fireproof shield 41, Fig. 6. In a modification the empty bag is retracted by a spring-loaded pulley. Examples of the compositions used are quoted.
