Abstract

1354578 Continuous casting OUTOKUMPU OY 14 May 1971 [19 May 1970] 15013/71 Heading B3F A continuously cast bar, strip or tube 1 is withdrawn upwardly through a mould 7 secured at one end (as by screwthread 9) in an end of a metal cooling-jacket 2 extending to below the surface 14 of molten metal, the lower end of the mould 7 (which contains a mandrel 8 as shown, if a tube 1 is east) being surrounded by a refractory sheath 6. The latter is retained by a nut 5 and a conical surface 11. The withdrawal of the casting 1 maintains the solidification front 13 below the melt level 14. The mould 7 and mandrel 8 are of graphite or a sintered mixture of metal and metal oxide. A number of castings may be performed simultaneously, using a number of mould-and-jacket assemblies.
