Abstract
1370452 Continuous casting ALCAN RESEAKCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 21 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 44036/71 Heading B3F Molten Al or Al alloy flows into the top of a mould 10 and while a major part of the flow is directed by a baffle 36 (in the form of a cross-bar) towards the mould wall, a minor part passes down through at least one hole 43 in the baffle to produce limited turbulence in the middle of the casting 12 which is withdrawn, e.g. by an hydraulic ram 20. For a casting of rectangular section, the elongated baffle 36 may be arranged on the short or the long axis of the rectangle and in the latter case may have more than one hole 43. The baffle 36 is supported by a float 30 to control the outflow from a launder spout 28. It bridges a hollow on the underside of the float, which carries wire supports 38 projecting over the mould top to limit descent. The mould is of Al. The hole 43 in the baffle 36 is between 3% and 45% of the bore of the spout 28 in area and has a diameter of <SP>3</SP>/ 16 _<SP>5</SP>/ 16 inch. Other dimensions, and casting rates, are mentioned. The melt temperature may be 685‹ C. Castings are said to have reduced centrecracking and an absence of a coarse columnar core, being equiaxed throughout or having an inner area of fine columnar grains.
