Abstract

1,153,082. Continuous casting-machines. KENNECOTT COPPER CORP. 21 Feb., 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 8266/67. Heading B3F. In the continuous production of a composite metal casting a tube T is cast between a mould 1 and mandrel 4 and a molten core metal of relatively lower melting point is introduced into the tube T through the mandrel 4 to form a solid core C. The tube T is cooled by water sprays N and withdrawn from the mould 1 by pinch rolls 17. The control of the level 22 of the molten core metal inside the tube T is achieved by a throttle rod 15 in conjuction with a radiation sensing means 23 and the composite casting is further cooled by water sprays N to extract heat from the core metal and solidify it so as to keep alloying interaction between the core and tube materials to a minimum. The mould 1 is made of graphite, is water cooled 2, has tapered walls 3 and may be vibrated. The mandrel 4 may be formed of graphite or cast-iron. In examples the tube T may be iron, copper, nickel or aluminium and the core may be aluminium, sodium, magnesium or lead. In a specific example a copper tube has an aluminium core. The composite casting may be swaged to form rods, drawn into clad wire, punched and rolled into pipe, or rolled flat to form clad sheets or strips.
