Abstract
1,174,849. Continuous casting-machines; making billets. CONCAST A.G. 20 Sept., 1967 [21 Sept., 1966], No. 42799/67. Headings B3A and B3F. In the continuous casting of steel castings the strand is withdrawn from a mould having a cross-section that differs from that of the desired final casting, and whilst still having a molten core the strand is plastically deformed, e.g. by shaped rolls, to produce a square or circular section billet in such a way that the difference between the areas of the provisional cross-section and of the billet exceeds the crosssectional area of the molten metal displaced from the core. The provisional cross-section produced by the mould is polygonal and oblique-angled or circular and, in the example described, is a rhombus. The strand may be cooled between the mould and the deforming means with less cooling in the acute-angled region of the rhombus that in the obtuse-angled region. In a casting plant where the strand is passed through deflecting guideways, the strand may be simultaneously plastically deformed and bent. The strand may be heated before it passes through the shaped rolls.
