Abstract
A continuously cast strand, e.g. of carbon or alloy steel, is reduced in cross-sectional area by a single stage forging or rolling operation between the mould and the natural tip of the molten core 2 so that the core length is reduced and the tip lies on the mould side of the plane 5 in which the strand assumes its final crosssection due to the reduction which occurs at a part of the strand where, if there were no reduction, the smallest diameter of the core would be 5-30 mm., and there would be a convection current in the liquid metal. The pouring or cooling rate is adjusted to give the required core diameter. The cross-section of the solidified portion may be reduced by 20% by the reduction. For square strands, the rolls may be grooved. Downstream of the reduction, further deformation of the strand may be performed.
