Abstract

883,649. Casting processes. DAUSSAN, H. J. July 7, 1960 [July 10, 1959; May 10, 1960], No. 23748/60. Class 83 (1). A device for use when top-pouring ingots comprises a sheath surrounding the pouring jet and a fire-proof auxiliary member fitted to the lower part of the sheath with sufficient clearance to enable it to slide along the latter as the level of the melt in the mould rises. The auxiliary member T, Fig. 1, may be of tubular form sliding over the sheath G and of a material which at the end of casting is destroyed and provides an insulating or exothermic layer. Alternatively the member T<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, may incorporate a container portion F<SP>1</SP> into which a cooling member may be placed. In other modifications, e.g. Figs. 11, 12, 14, the auxiliary member incorporates holes 12, 15, 27 so directed that the molten metal passing through them has a swirling action which causes impurities to gather as at 13, Figs. 11 and 12, and 30, Fig. 14.
