Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an ingot having no craters without forming any boron oxide on the inside surface of a mold sleeve by subjecting said inside surface to a non-oxidative atmosphere at the time of passing the molten metal in a crucible in the mold sleeve made of boron nitride and performing continuous casting.
CONSTITUTION: A leading bar 14 made of, for example, Ag-60w/oPd alloy is inserted into a mold sleeve 6 made of boron nitride from its under side and is so set that its top end reaches the bottom of a crucible 1. Next, an inert gas such as nitrogen gas is blowed to the bottom end of the sleeve 6 by an inert gas or reducing gas blowing device 10 to flow said gas into the clearance between the sleeve 6 inside surface and the bar 14 and to subject the sleeve 6 inside surface to a non-oxidative atmosphere. Further, the same is done in the crucible 1 as well. In this state, the blank material of the above-described alloy is inserted into the crucible 1 and is melted by heating with a high frequency heating coil 3; also a carbon ring heating element 7 is made to generate heat. When the above-described material has completely melted, electric power is so controlled as to maintain it at about 1,450°C, thence the bar 14 is pulled and the molten metal is continuously cast through the sleeve 6.
