Abstract

1407470 Casting ingots; casting processes HOESCH AG 13 Nov 1972 [16 Nov 1971] 52227/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] A method of casting killed steel ingots or slabs comprises locating in the mould a slagforming powder (e.g. contained in a bag) at 5 to 50 cm from the mould base, there being provided 1 to 3 kg. of powder per tonne of metal and the powder having a bulk density of 250 to 705 g./l., pouring liquid steel into the mould until it reaches the desired height and completely covering a fused slag layer, formed from the powder, with water to solidify the slag layer. The slag layer then rises from the steel, fractures and water contacts the liquid steel. In order to make up shrinkage of the ingot during solidification further steel may be added to the mould. The further steel may be poured with or without the addition of water during pouring.
