Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture longitudinally short steel ingots of superior internal quality by making unidirectional solidification from ingot bottoms possible by covering the inside wall of a flat mold with an heat insulating material while leaving a ring-shaped lip part at the bottom of the inside wall and then by injecting melted metal.
CONSTITUTION: Flat mold 2 used here should be of not more then 1 in ratio H/D of height H to width D and while ring-shaped lip part 21 of fixed height (h) is left at the bottom part of its inside wall, the entire surface of the inside wall is covered with heat insulating material 22. From foundry ladle 3, melted steel 5 is poured into mold 2 via nozzle 4 so that ratio H/D of steel-ingot height H to width D will be not more than 1.5. The top surface of this melted steel is covered with heat insulstor 8 to radiate heat from the melted steel only via surface plate 1, facilitating unidirectional solidification from the steel ingot bottom. Melted steel of condensed segragation remaining on the top surface of melted steel is removed in an adequate method.
