Abstract
1,192,438. Continuous casting. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 20 Sept., 1968 [26 Sept., 1967], No. 43800/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] A starter plug (or plug and dummy bar) for continuous casting is formed from the end of a casting run, by inserting a ring 3 of refractory material, at the finish of the casting cycle, into the metal 2 at the top of the mould 1, then when the metal has solidified to form a keying configuration and the material has been disintegrated by the metal heat, the divided material is removed, e.g. by vacuum cleaner, before the last section is cut off the cast strand to provide the plug (or plug and bar) for the next casting cycle. The last section may remain in the mould while it is severed, to be ready for the next casting, or the strand may be withdrawn before the severing. The ring 3 is lined with steel plate 5 as a chill, or iron powder is incorporated in the refractory material, or powdered ferro-silicon or iron is applied with sodium silicate. The ring is coated with a graphite lubricating composition 4. It is moulded from a mixture of two foamed compositions (see Division C3).
