Abstract
1448517 Mould for casting directionally solidified articles GENERAL MOTORS CORP 5 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 38917/74 Heading B3F Apparatus for casting directionally solidified articles comprises a mould supported on a chill plate 10 so as to define a chamber 28 between the mould and chill plate, an exothermic composition 24 being provided around the article-forming cavities 15 of the mould. Molten metal poured into the sprue 20 passes to the cavities 15 via the chamber 28 and also contacts, and thus ignites, the exothermic material 24 through openings 30. A nickel-base alloy may be poured in a vacuum at a temperature of 2900 F.
