Abstract
1280055 Crystal growing UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 10 March 1970 [13 March 1969] 11326/70 Heading B1S [Also in Division B3] Single-crystal doubly-orientated alloy castings are manufactured in an apparatus including a shell mould 10 having an article-forming cavity 12, a constriction 16 at the base of the article-forming cavity and a crystallization starter portion communicating with the constriction 16. The starter portion comprises a vertical passage 20 and a horizontal passage 18, each passage being closed at its lower end by a water-cooled chill plate 24. The lengths of the two passages from their junction to their chill plates differ. The shell mould is surrounded by heaters and backed up by a refractory packing 28 in a flask 26. Before casting the shell mould is heated to above the melting point of alloy and the alloy with at least 100‹F superheat is cast into the mould. Solidification starts at each chill plate, and at the junction of the passages 18 and 20 the columnar dendritic growth from each chill plate meets so that the dendritic growth is oriented in two perpendicular planes. As the vertical axis of the cast body is to be the stress axis of the body the passage 20 is shorter than passage 18 and the vertical orientation of the dendritic growth is stronger than its horizontal orientation. If the body requires a horizontal stress axis then the passage 18 is made shorter than passage 20 (Fig 2 -not shown). The constriction 16a, 16b, 16c, selects one of the grains from the starter portion as solidification is effected upwardly into the article forming mould portion 10.
