Abstract

1,250,842. Casting processes; moulds. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 28 Feb., 1969 [20 March, 1968], No. 10715/69. Heading B3F. Metal poured into a ceramic tube 4 solidifies upwardly from a chill plate 6 on which the tube stands and one grain grows upwardly through a bottom opening 24 of each mould 16, 18 or 22 so that a single crystal is shaped inside each mould. The solidification fronts in the moulds lag behind that rising in the tube 4 so that the metal in the tube controls the lateral heat extraction from the moulds. The tube 4 is preheated by a resistance coil 12 or a susceptor surrounded by an induction coil.
