Abstract

1,270,630. Moulds, casting processes. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 6 Oct., 1970 [30 Oct., 1969], no. 47364/70. Heading B3F. A shell mould has an article-forming cavity 20, 22, 24, a vented water-cooled chill 36 clamped to a flange 38 at the top of the articleforming cavity and a runner 14, 30 which enters the bottom of the article-forming cavity. Four article-forming cavities are spaced around a central pouring/feeder/sprue 10. To cast directionally solidified articles e.g. turbine blades the mould is placed on a powdered Al 2 O 3 base 44 within the susceptor 46 of an induction furnace having vertically spaced separately power-supplied induction coils 48, 49 and the mould is preheated above the melting point of the metal to be cast. Molten metal is poured into the feeder/sprue 10 to fill the cavities and downward solidification is commenced from the chill plate by progressively turning off the induction coils in a downward direction. The alloy in the feeder/sprue 10 is kept molten by resistance heaters 50. When casting single crystal articles a solidification starting portion 34 is provided with a spiral passage 32 to select a single grain. For the casting of columnar grained articles the spiral passage is omitted. The entire casting assembly is contained within a vacuum chamber for vacuum or inert atmosphere casting.
