Abstract
1,138,404. Vacuum casting. ALLIS-CHALMERS MFG. CO. 23 Dec., 1966 [6 Jan., 1966], No. 57742/66. Heading B3F. In a method of vacuum casting high purity precision metal parts at least one heated mould 22, 23, is located in a closed vessel 11 evacuated by means 16 and the casting in the mould cavity 25 is cooled in such a way as to produce an upwardly advancing solid-liquid interface which progresses slowly and terminates in the casting in a blind riser portion 30 situated in the uppermost part of the mould cavity 25. In the embodiment described a plurality of mould parts 22, 23, 24 are used in stacked relationship and carried in a yoke member 20, the mould cavities being interconnected by a feed channel 29 and are supplied with molten metal from a crucible 35 located directly above the moulds. The moulds and the crucible are heated by induction coils 46 and 45 respectively, the heating being controlled to produce the desired solidification of the casting. Plug members 41 and 36 respectively are actuable to permit the supply of material from the hopper 40 to the crucible and from the crucible to the mould cavities. The mould and yoke parts are made from spectrographically pure graphite to prevent contamination of the resultant castings. The mould cavities may be provided with recesses 50 for inserts or core portions so as to facilitate the changing of the shape of a particular part of the casting. These inserts may be of metal which may through surface fusion become incorporated in the resultant casting. The construction of the mould is such as to permit the mould parts to be reused.
