Abstract

1,250,335. Casting machines. ELECTRICITY COUNCIL. 26 Nov., 1969 [17 Oct., 1968], No. 49286/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] Casting apparatus comprises an electrical induction heated coreless melting unit 10 arranged above an electrical induction heated holding unit 11 which in turn is located above a casting machine 21 and has a controlled outlet for the metal. Both the holding crucible 11 and the moulds 23 may be connected to a source of vacuum, each mould being sealed initially by a thin aluminium plate 26 which is easily pierced by the molten metal when the stopper 20 is raised. The holding crucible 11 is connected to the casting machine 21 by a mechanically operated expanding joint 27 which is released after teeming a particular mould and is reengaged when the next mould is in position. The metal in the melting crucible 10 is protected from oxidation by a layer of slag 14, any excess slag being discharged through a spout 15.
