Abstract
1,262,580. Casting processes; moulds. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 28 Feb., 1969 [20 March, 1968], No. 10714/69. Heading B3F. Moulds 16, 18, 22 for casting single crystal pieces or shapes are mounted on the inner surface of a ceramic tube 4 resting on a chill plate 6 containing water ducts 8; when molten metal is poured into the interior 10 of the tube 4, the solidification front rises from the chill plate 6 and a single crystal grows in each mould 16, 18, 22 through a restricted bottom opening 24. The bottoms of the moulds may be equally spaced, at least by a half inch, from the chill plate 6. The shell-moulded alumina tube 4 is preheated, e.g. by a graphite susceptor between it and an induction coil 12. A ceramic layer 26 may cover the moulds 16, 18, 22 and tube wall to facilitate mould extraction. A tube 102, Fig. 3, may restrict the metal in the tube 104 to an annular space 106 and in such an arrangement a mould may contain a central tube extending longitudinally inside it and spaced from its wall so that the metal crystal grows through and around the tube.
