Abstract
1,158,861. Casting processes. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 6 July, 1966 [16 July, 1965 (2)], No. 30304/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions B1 and H5] A mould heater for the controlled cooling of alloys includes a refractory sleeve surrounding the mould (2), 2a, 54, and independently controllable coils axially disposed for heating selected portions of the mould. In one form (Fig. 1), resistance heating coils (24, 26) embedded in refractory cement (28), e.g. aluminium oxide, are mounted between refractory aluminium oxide walls (23, 22). In Fig. 2, induction heating coils 42a, 42b, 42c surround refractory cylinders 40, 41, e.g. aluminium silicate and graphite felt respectively and refractory graphite susceptors 36. In Figs. 3-5, molybdenum resistance heating coils 68 are embedded in stacked refractory alumina rings 66 spaced from the mould by refractory granular aluminium oxide 74. The heater, which rests on a water-cooled chill plate, e.g. 16, heats the mould to a temperature above the M.Pt. of the alloy, and solidification begins at the chill plate. The first cooling is random crystallization, but as the solid-liquid front moves upward, columnar crystals extend from the bottom of the mould elements. As solidification begins, cooling of the mould is controlled by progressively turning off the coils from the bottom to the top. Thermocouple openings (35) are provided.
