Abstract
1374462 Casting composite articles DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 5 June 1972 [22 June 1971] 29125/71 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions C7 and F1] A method of casting a metal article, e.g. a turbine blade, comprises introducing a first alloy into a mould, progressively cooling the mould to produce crystal growth in the form of a vertical columnar structure, introducing a second molten alloy compatible with the first into the mould while the surface of the first alloy is in a liquid state and subsequently cooling the mould. A third alloy having the same composition as the first may subsequently be introduced into the mould. The mould 4 is provided with a watercooled base-plate 7 and is surrounded by a furnace 3 which can be raised or lowered relative to the mould. It may be provided with an overflow (30) Fig. 2, (not shown), whose vertical location determines the depth of the first alloy in the mould and hence the position of the interface between the two alloys. The process may be carried out in a vacuum or inert atmosphere the mould being preheated to 150‹ to 200‹ C. above the alloy liquidus temperature.
