Abstract

1352058 Casting processes; making ingots HEPPENSTALL CO 27 April 1971 11630/71 Headings B3F and B3A A steel ingot weighing at least 20 tons is produced by casting an ingot 10 of the desired size, removing an axial core from the ingot to form a central cavity 11, melting an electrode 14 within the cavity under a fused slag 13, and solidifying the melted electrode metal within the cavity. The electrode 14 preferably has the same composition as the ingot originally cast and may be made from the core removed from the ingot. The inside surface of the cavity 11 is freed from excessive oxide by shot blasting or machining and the ingot 10 is heated before melting of the electrode is begun. The core may be removed by trepan boring, trepan punching or drift punching.
