Abstract

1,181,663. Electroslag refining. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 26 April, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 19968/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions C3, C5 and C7] In a method of electroslag refining ingots of steel or other metal a tablet 5 is placed in the region of the tip of the electrode 1 before the start of refining, said tablet comprising ingredients which react exothermically when fired and which burn to yield a slag which is suitable for refining the metal of the electrode. The tablet may be in the form of a block or disc having a central hole for admitting a primer plug for initiating the firing of the starter tablet 5 and may include within the body of the tablet a wire mesh (Figs. 1-4, not shown) that may pass the initial starting current and form an alloying constituent, e.g. nickel, of an ingot. Slag and flux is added to the slag formed by the melting of the tablet 5 and may be present, for example, when forming an ingot in a mould 1 having a water-cooled copper base 3 and metal starting plate 4, in the form of a sleeve 7 that melts during the refining process. The exothermically reacting ingredients of the tablet 5 comprise a substance selected from aluminium, magnesium and calcium silicide and an oxidizing agent selected from iron oxides, alkali metal nitrates, chlorates and per-chlorates and ammonium perchlorate. Numerous examples are given of compositions for the tablet to meet specific requirements of slag and flux formation including binders, organic or inorganic, used in mixing, moulding, and curing the tablets. Specific examples are given for the materials used in making the sleeve 7, which may be of four types; cured, sintered or calcined, cast, or exothermic. Examples of materials used in the composition of the tablet are fluorspar, powdered aluminium, potassium nitrate, iron millscale, sodium fluoride. Magnesium powder may be used with varying proportions of aluminium to yield fluorspar/magnesia/alumina fluxes. In electroslag welding a suitable slag comprises manganese oxide, silica, alumina, fluorspar, sodium fluoride and either titanium dioxide, potassium oxide or sodium oxide. An exothermic composition for electroslag welding comprises manganese dioxide, calcium silicide, powdered aluminium, potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride.
