Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A method of forming an iron casting comprises forming a mould having a mould cavity and a coating including cobalt, nickel or iron metal on the internal surface of the mould cavity and/or on the surface of a core mould which is included within the mould cavity; casting the iron in the mould; and subsequently breaking down the mould and any core moulds to free the casting, the mould and core moulds being formed from a granular refractory material so as to allow them to be broken down in this way. The cobalt, nickel or iron included in the coating may initially be applied to form the coating in the form of an oxide or other compound of these metals which is subsequently treated to give the elemental metal. Alternatively the cobalt, nickel or iron is already in its metallic form when it is applied to form the coating. The cobalt, nickel or iron or compound thereof may be applied as a powder or in the form of a suspension. A preferred non-aqueous medium is isopropyl alcohol. The coating may be provided on the surface of the mould by applying the metal directly thereto or by applying the metal or compound thereof to the surface of the pattern used to form the mould and then transferring it to the surface of the mould during the process of consolidation of the mould upon the pattern.
