Abstract

1422247 Forming refractory moulds HITACHI Ltd 16 March 1973 [21 March 1972] 12688/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Moulds for precision casting are prepared from a slurry comprising a powdered refractory, a binder formed by hydrolysing ethyl silicate with less than the theoretical amount of water and a gelling promoting agent in such an amount that gelling will commence in 5-8 minutes after introduction of the slurry into a shaping mould by introducing the slurry into a shaping mould, removing the casting mould produced as soon as it has solidified sufficiently to be non-flowable, contacting it with water containing a surface active agent and/or a water-soluble silica sol to harden it completely and finally drying and calcining the mould. The refractory material may be zircon sand, chamotte powder or fused silica. Initial hardening of the slurry may be effected by contacting it with the water while still in the shaping mould.
