Abstract

1378613 Foundry moulds TITECH INTERNATIONAL Inc 6 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 10784/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division C3] A method of making a foundry mould comprises forming a mixture of a refractory material comprising graphite and/or olivine sand, a water soluble binder (e.g. K or Na silicate) and water, shaping the mixture (e.g. by ramming on or into a pattern), baking the mould at a temperature above the boiling point of water but not high enough to cause destructive emission of steam (e.g. not greater than 290‹ F.) and coating the mould with a composition comprising a refractory (e.g. Al 2 O 3 ) and a binder (e.g. acrylate binder). The mould may be hardened before baking by gassing with CO 2 . The coatedhardened mould may be employed for the centrifugal casting of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb and alloys thereof. In the examples Ti castings were made by vacuum pouring of Ti into moulds, and the moulds were subjected to 60 g. force on a 5ft. diameter table rotating at 300 r.p.m.
