Abstract
A plastic composition for preparing expendable moulds for use in the casting of titanium and its alloys, and other refractory metals, comprises a major portion of carbonaceous, refractory particles, e.g. graphite or amorphous carbon; one or more temporary carbohydrate binding agents, e.g. maize, rice, wheat or barley starch, dextrin, or sugar; one or more permanent carbonaceous binding agents, e.g. coal tar, asphalt, or a vegetable oil pitch; a surface active agent, e.g. an amine salt of a sulphated aliphatic alcohol containing from 8 to 20 carbon atoms; and water. The temporary binding agent or agents is or are destroyed when the composition is fired. In one Example the composition comprises 400 grams graphite powder, 56 grams electrode joint cement (a mixture of graphite powder, sugar, and water), 80 grams ground coal tar pitch, 80 grams maize starch, 6 grams N, N diethyl cyclohexylamine salt of sulphated lauryl alcohol, and 146 grams tap water. Several alternative surface active agents are specified.
