Abstract

A clayless refractory product comprises ash of purely vegetable origin comprising mainly microporous unicellular silicia in the form of cristobalite and/or tridymite, and of an alkaline earth compound in amount less than 20 per cent of the final composition. 0.5 to 4 per cent of an organic binder may also be present. The ash may contain up to 5 per cent of carbon. Preferred ingredients are lime, rice hull ash and pregelatinzed rice flour. The product is obtained by fixing at less than 3,000 DEG F. and at a temperature substantially less than that at which it is to be used. The alkaline earth metal compounds are defined as those giving rise to the oxides under the firing conditions.
