Abstract
676,357. Refractory compositions. HENDREN, R. R. Dec. 21,1948, No. 32972/48. Class 22 A refractory masonry unit it prepared by mixing refractory fire clay and amorphous graphite, adding water, shaping, drying until at least 80 per cent of the water is removed and firing in a reducing atmosphere at 1800‹F. to 2800‹F. until vitrification occurs. Grog -crushed and fired clay. e.g. used brick-may also be added. Preferred preparations, by weight, are fire clay 22 to 92 per cent; amorphous graphite 52 to 6 per cent; and grog in an amount not exceeding 40 per cent. Examples are also given wherein equivalent amounts of flake graphite, plumbago, kish (a free carbon), or amorphous carbon, replace the amorphous graphite.
