Abstract

A refractory composition consists of chrome ore or calcined magnesia or a mixture thereof containing more than 5% calcined magnesia, with 1-10% by weight of anhydrous, finely-divided sodium silicate. 1-6% by weight of bentonite or other bonding silicate or clay may be added. The composition is mixed with water to form a slurry which is sprayed on to refractory walls of furnaces during operation or whilst the furnace is at a high temperature.
