Abstract

A binder for refractory material consists of aluminium oxide formed by the action of air on the surface of molten aluminium during aluminium production, and ortho-phosphoric acid. The acid may be anhydrous or in aqueous solution and can be added to the refractory material and aluminium oxide, or the oxide can be mixed with, or dissolved in, the acid before addition to the refractory material. Refractory materials specified are natural sillimanite, aluminium silicates, refractory chromium or magnesium compounds, fireclays, alumina, calcined earths, or mixtures of any of these. Crushed waste bricks may also be employed. The refractory mix forms a paste which is moulded and fired at at least 500 DEG C.
