Abstract
A refractory castable mix consists of, by weight, 10 to 40% calcium aluminate cement, and 90 to 60% refractory aggregate having a negative to +0.3% thermal expansion over the range 0 DEG to 2000 DEG F., and which does not react with the cement at temperatures up to 2000 DEG F. to form a liquid or melt. The cement contains more than 50% alumina. Specified aggregates are petalite, spodumene, cordierite, petalite-fireclay grog, or their mixtures, which have been precalcined at above 2000 DEG F. Fused silica and quartz are also suitable.
