Abstract

Refractory furnace linings, bricks, &c. are made by intimately mixing dry hydraulic cement, e.g. aluminous cement, and other materials, e.g. chromite and calcined magnesite or dolomite, adapted to provide respectively sesquioxide and protoxide for producing a magnesium-containing spinel composition, adding water to render the mixture plastic, applying to the furnace or forming into the required shapes, and, after the cement has hardened, heated to ordinary metallurgical furnace temperatures. A suitable composition comprises substantially equal parts by weight of chromite, calcined magnesite and aluminous cement. The materials are all finely ground to pass a 100 mesh screen. Refractory aggregate may be added. This may be provided for by taking as the starting materials three parts of chromite, three parts of calcined magnesite and one part of aluminous cement, and breaking up the first two materials so that only one-third of each will pass the 100 mesh screen, the remaining two-thirds being of graduated coarseness up to half inch size.
