Abstract

A core for moulds in which refractory materials are cast consists of a mixture of grains of a cast refractory, e.g. that described in Specification 265,847, [Class 22], and grains of a precalcined refractory containing only small amounts of glass-forming ingredients or capable of reacting with the glass to form a refractory material, e.g. alumina bauxite, magnesia, or diaspore. Grains of the two refractories, preferably of a size passing a 20 mesh screen and retained on a 60 mesh, are mixed, in the proportions of 25-75 of one to 75-25 of the other, with linseed oil as a binder, moulded to shape and baked at a temperature of about 200 DEG C.
