480,256. Refractory substances. TENNANT, W. J. (Carborundum Co.) Aug. 18, 1936, No. 22728. [Classes 22 and 70] A porous crystalline refractory formed by casting a fusion of refractory oxides has a porous inner structure and a substantially imperforate outer surface. Examples of suitable oxides, which term includes spinel, are chromite, alumina, and magnesia-alumina spinel. The raw mix is so selected or composed as to contain a gas-producing substance, e.g. iron oxide, and the cast fusion is chilled quickly so as to encase the casting in an imperforate shell. As shown, the gas cells a are elongated and are arranged normal to the surface. In an example, bauxite ore with an addition of a gas producing substance such as ferric oxide, coke, gypsum or aluminium hydroxide is fused in an electric furnace and poured into a mould, e.g. of iron, which is cooled quickly.
