Abstract
A heat-cast basic refractory, which is not brittle, porous, or cracked, has, as two of its major crystalline constituents, zirconia and forsterite in a non-crystalline matrix, the forsterite composing at least 20.7 per cent of the mix and the zirconia being included with the basic phases of forsterite and magnesium spinel with which periclase may or may not be associated. The refractories are melted electrically and cast in preformed moulds. Zirkite, zircon, magnesite, talc, bauxite, kyanite and olivine may be used as raw materials, but the content of ferrous oxide should be low to avoid porosity. To ensure non-porosity, silica must be present in an amount at least equal to 11 per cent, and in a forsterite-zirconia system, containing only small amounts of spinel, there may be only 15 per cent zirconia present. Larger amounts of spinel can be present, provided that the amounts of zirconia and silica exceed 15 per cent and 11 per cent respectively, whereby a gradation in basicity can be obtained. The aluminium can be added in the form of a siliceous ore to provide the silica necessary for the formation of the forsterite. Further magnesia can be included if at least 15 per cent of both spinel and zirconia are present, the excess magnesia over that required to constitute the forsterite forming a solid solution in the zirconia.
