Abstract
Refractory bricks of high density are formed from non-plastic materials by utilizing 45 to 65 per cent of large particles between 3 and 30 mesh per inch, 55 to 35 per cent of small particles passing through a screen of 50 mesh per inch, and few or no particles of intermediate size. Diagrams showing series of equal-density curves for varying proportions of particles of three different ranges of size are shown for magnesite, chrome, calcined kaolin, calcined fireclay, calcined cyanite (with different actual sizes of particles), calcined diaspore, and ganister. The particles in the selected proportions are moistened before or after mixing, placed in moulds under a pressure of at least 1000 and preferably from 5000 to 15000 lbs. per square inch, and subjected to firing temperature.
