Abstract
Refractory abrasive articles comprise grains of silicon carbide bonded by zirconium modified silicon nitride. The articles are formed by mixing silicon carbide grains with silicon and either zirconium or a zirconium compound shaping the mix followed by drying and firing in a non-oxidizing nitrogenous atmosphere. Bentonite may be added to aid the shaping, and lignone as a temporary bond. The zirconium compound is stabilized with calcium oxide. The silicon carbide can be partly replaced by spinel, magnesia, alumina or mullite. Pore formers may be added to the mixture, e.g. carbon containing materials which are burnt out, or gas generating materials. Specifications 716,836 and 716,842 are referred to.
