Abstract

Compositions suitable for refractories and abrasives are made by firing in a non-oxidizing atmosphere containing nitrogen a mixture of a refractory oxidic material and finely divided silicon. A bond of silicon nitride is formed. The mixture may be shaped before firing or briquettes made and, after firing, ground to give loose granules of silicon nitride bonded oxidic material which may be subsequently bonded by sintered metals, vitreous or ceramic bonds. A temporary binder, e.g. dextrin, is used in shaping. Refractory oxidic material is defined and specified materials are the oxides of aluminium, beryllium, thorium, chromium, zirconium, magnesium, silicon and silicates aluminates, spinels and porcelains. Preferably at least 25 per cent. silicon nitride is present. The compositions can be made more porous by the addition of pore formers, e.g. naphthalene is added and subsequently burned out, or a gas generating agent is included.
