Abstract

A metal ceramic product having high strength at elevated temperatures and high resistance to oxidation and thermal shock consists of a strongly cohesive mass consisting of 25-50 per cent by volume of finely divided alumina having a particle size 0.1-45 microns intimately dispersed in a continuous phase of 75-50 per cent by volume of sintered chromium particles not exceeding 45 microns in size. Materials of high purity should preferably be used and in particular the chromium should contain less than 0.3 per cent of carbon. The product is made by forming a shaped mixture of the materials and firing at 1450 DEG 1800 DEG C for a sufficient time and in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen or argon for example. The shaped mixture may be formed from dry constituents or by a slip-casting procedure (see Group XXII).
