Abstract
571,317. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered metals ; alloys. MILLER, G. L., and MUREX, Ltd. Nov. 26, 1943, No. 19793. [Class 82 (i)] In the production of sintered metal products a pressed mixture of metal powders containing at least one readily oxidizable metal or alloy is sintered in vacuo or in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, the pressing is protected from oxidation by the presence in the heating zone of a porous, readily oxidizable material. This may comprise silicon, aluminium, titanium or alloys thereof or lower oxides of such metals, e.g. titanium monoxide. This enables the use of moderate vacuum and an atmosphere of commercially available reducing gas, e.g. electrolytic hydrogen, but this should be dried. In an example a powder pressing containing iron, aluminium, nickel, cobalt and copper was placed in a graphite boat, covered with powdered alumina and then with finely-powdered alloy of titanium and aluminium, or the covering powders could be mixed, and the whole heated. to 1300‹ C. in commercially dry hydrogen for four hours. There was no increase in oxygen content but, when the protective powder was omitted, oxygen increased 4.5 per cent. The use of titanium aluminium alloy is valuable as it protects from nitrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, if present in small amounts, as well as against oxygen and water.
