Abstract

Dense alloys are formed by mixing tungsten and/or molybdenum with a solution of a compound decomposable by heat to form refractory oxide and with a solution of a compound of a metal of lower melting point than, and limited solubility in, the main constituent, which compound is capable of being reduced to metal, heating the mixture in a reducing atmosphere to produce a dry mixture of powdered tuggsten and/or molybdenum, refractory oxide and the said metal, pressing the dry mixture to form a compact and sintering at a temperature above the melting point of the said metal. The refractory oxide forms 1-20 per cent of the alloy and the lower melting point metal not more than 10 per cent. The refractory oxide may be thorium oxide added as a solution of thorium nitrate and the lower melting metal may be nickel, e.g. in a proportion of 0.5-1 per cent, added as a solution of nickel chloride. Reduction may be carried out at 500 DEG C. in an atmosphere of town's gas, forming gas or hydrogen. Other refractory oxides may be used, such as oxides of alkaline earth metals, aluminium, cerium, titanium, zirconium or silicon. Other suitable lower melting point metals are cobalt, iron and platinum.
