Abstract
A refractory metal (i.e. Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Mo, W, Re, and especially Ta or Nb, or alloys of these metals with one another) is produced by reacting the oxide thereof with a reactive metal (Al, Ca, Ce, Mg, B, or Si) to form an impure alloy of the refractory metal containing a small amount of the reactive metal and subsequently electron beam melting the alloy under high vacuum to reduce the content of reactive metal and other volatile impurities. The oxide starting materials may be relatively pure oxides or oxide mixtures, or ore concentrates containing a large percentage of oxide. The reaction causes a slag to form so a protective atmosphere of argon is unnecessary but may be used. The reactants are preferably mixed in powder form and the reaction may be initiated by passing a current through a wire of the reactive metal embedded in the mixture or by an oxyacetylene flame.
