Abstract

1,148,165. Making alloy powders. OFFICE NATIONAL D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES AEROSPATIALES. April 1, 1966 (April 8, 1965], No. 14662/66. Heading C7D. Alloy powders are produced by heating a mixture of two or more ultrafine powdered metals and an inert diluent material in an atmosphere containing hydrogen and a halogen and optionally removing the inert diluent material. At least one of the powdered metals must have been made by reduction of a metal compound (e.g. oxide, formate, oxalate or carbonate in the presence of an inert-diluent at 900-1100‹ C. The inert diluent, which prevents the powder particles from coalescing, may be CaO, MgO, BaO, or A1 2 O 3 , may have been formed prior to, or concurrent with, the reduction of the metal compound and is preferably present in the amount of 25 vol. % of the powder mixture. The inert diluent may then be removed if desired by the action of a dilute acid, by magnetic separation or by means of differential density. The mixture may contain some magnesium filings to trap any excess oxygen in the heating step.
