Abstract

An electrical contact or like high-density metal body is made by (a) intimately mixing a reducible compound of tungsten or other refractory metal having a melting point not below 1800 DEG C. and a reducible compound of silver or copper in finely comminuted form; (b) subjecting the mixture to a reduction treatment to convert it into a mixture of small particles of the constituent metals having an average particle size of 0.5-2 microns; (c) compacting the resultant mixture; and (d) sintering the compact in a reducing atmosphere. The starting compounds may be oxides, oxalates or carbonates. The reduction may be effected in an atmosphere of hydrogen or cracked ammonia by heating to 600-700 DEG C. for 30 mins. and then at 900-1000 for 30-60 mins., compacting may be effected at 10-50 t.p.s.i., and the sintering at 1100-1350 DEG C. for 10-60 mins. The metal body contains 30-80 per cent of refractory metal.
