Abstract

Iron oxide, hydrated iron oxide, or other iron compound yielding an oxide on heating is heated with an alkaline earth metal compound and an alkali metal oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate, the atomic ratio of iron to alkaline earth metal being not less than 9:1 and the heating is carried out at a temperature at which alkali metal ferrite is formed, for example 500-800 DEG C. It is stated that when this alkali metal ferrite is treated with water it is hydrolized with the liberation of an iron oxide, more or less hydrated, which has not been subjected to a high temperature and can be reduced at a much lower temperature than can an oxide which has been heated to a high temperature.ALSO:Magnetizable ferrous powder of particle size not greater than 5000 Angstrom units is made by heating a mixture of iron oxide, or hydrated iron oxide, or other iron compound which yields an oxide on heating, with an alkaline earth metal compound and an alkali metal oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate, the atomic ratio of iron to alkaline earth metal being not less than 9 : 1 and the heating being carried out at a temperature at which alkali metal ferrite is formed, treating the product with water, remvoing the aqueous solution formed, and heating the residue at a temperature below 500 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere to reduce the iron to the metallic state. The alkaline earth metal compound may be the oxide, hydroxide, formate, oxalate or carbonate of calcium, barium, or strontium and the alkali metal compound may be the hydroxide or carbonate of sodium or potassium. The heating may be carried out at 500-800 DEG C. to maintain the product in a liquid or semi-liquid state when using an alkali metal hydroxide or at 700-800 to produce a sintered mass when using an alkali metal carbonate and may be in an atmosphere of oxygen-free nitrogen. The final heating at 250-500 DEG C. may be in an atmosphere of hydrogen flowing at the rate of at least 300 litres per hour for every 10-15 grams of solid. Ferro-magnetic oxid materials other than iron which are decomposed or reduced to the metal may be added to the mixture.
