Abstract

PURPOSE: To raise the uniformity of grain size of and magnetic characteristic of magnetic metallic iron powder to be manufactured by adding a specific metal compound and nickel hydroxide to a suspension of ferrous hydroxide as a raw material.
CONSTITUTION: To an alkaline suspension(pH 11) of Fe(OH)2, at least one of the chlorides, sulfates, and nitrates of Zn and Al and Si compounds(e.g., water glass) is added in an atomic ratio to Fe of 0.001 to 0.1, and at the same time Ni(OH)2 is added in a Ni/Fe atomic ratio of 0.001 to 0.15. And, an oxygen-containing gas, e.g., air, is introduced into the suspension to precipitate alpha-Fe oxyhydroxide. The alpha-Fe oxyhydroxide is washed with water, dried to iron oxide, and then heated to 300 to 500°C for reduction in a reductive atmosphere to manufacture a magnetic iron composed primarily of iron hydroxide. Thus, a magnetic metal powder having a high denseness, an uniform grain size, and excellent magnetic characteristic can be obtained.
