Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the characteristics of a magnetic powder composed primarily of metallic iron to be manufactured by a method in which Ni(OH)2 is added to a ferrous hydroxide suspension as a raw material and also the surfaces of iron hydroxide formed are coated with a layer containing one of an Al compound and a Zn compound and an Si compound.
CONSTITUTION: To an alkaline suspension of Fe(OH)2, whose pH is regulated to 11 or more, Ni(OH)2 is added in a Ni/Fe ratio of 0.001W0.15 and then oxygen- containing gas, e.g., air, is introduced into the suspension to precipitate alpha-Fe oxyhydroxide. Then, the surfaces of the iron hydroxide particles as such or after being baked are coated with a layer containing 0.01W10wt%[(Al+Zn/Fe)] sulfates or nitrates of Al and Zn and then with a layer containing 0.1W10wt%(Si/Fe) a water-soluble silicate. The iron hydroxide pariticles thus obtained are washed with water, dried, and then heated in a reductive atmosphere for reduction to obtain a densed granular metal magnetic powder having an uniform grain size.
